VANITI HOUSE – CAPE TOWN HOTELS ARE REDEFINING INCLUSIVE LUXURY

It was only in early 2021, during a conversation with Richard Thompson from Inclu Group in the UK, that I was introduced to an entirely new way of seeing accessibility. Until that moment, I had never truly paused to consider how differently bathrooms could be designed whether for future needs, aging in place, or specific mobility requirements.

That single discussion changed everything. It opened my eyes to the possibility of creating spaces that are not only functional, but beautifully inclusive. From that point forward, Vaniti House embraced a deeper purpose to curate a collection of elegant, considered support rail systems that elevate both the safety and aesthetic experience of the bathroom.

I needed that moment of awakening to understand the real importance of independence in our homes, in hotels, and within the built environment as a whole. Today, this awareness is gaining incredible momentum across the world and Cape Town is no exception. As we assist three major hotel groups with their accessible bathroom products, it has become clear that inclusivity is no longer a niche request but an essential part of thoughtful, future-focused design.

What I’ve come to realise is that the term grab rail still triggers an outdated perception, “I’m getting old,” “I’m not there yet,” “It’s going to look clinical.” I saw this play out with a client earlier this year. She would genuinely benefit from having a support rail in her shower, yet her reaction was instant. No, no, no… I don’t want that in my bathroom.

And yet, when you really take the time to see the products, they reveal their true beauty. They are designed to bring comfort and safety without ever feeling clinical or out of place. They’re gentle to the touch, elegant in form, and meant to be noticed, celebrated and not hidden away.

Cape Town’s leading hotels are proving that accessibility can be luxurious. And as more designers, architects, developers and homeowners embrace this thinking, we’re shaping a future where inclusive design is simply good design.
